Collaborative effort yields a new Scleral Contact Lens Concept
Drs. Neil Hodur and Jennifer Harthan worked closely with Metro Optics to create a new Scleral Contact Lens Design and fitting system. Drawing on their wealth of clinical experience working with a wide range of corneal and vision challenges, Drs. Harthan and Hodur guided a highly successful effort to create a truly remarkable lens called the “InSight Scleral”.
At Metro Optics we had been carefully observing the scleral lens segment of the custom contact lens industry for several years to see where the modality would head. Our initial expectations were that scleral lenses would receive token acceptance and be primarily relegated to small population of patients that just could not be taken care of in any other way. We also had reservations about the long-term effects of wearing such a large rigid lens.
In 2014, our team at Metro Optics began working with Scleral contact lenses. We partnered with another custom lens manufacturer and licensed their scleral design. It was introduced as our Genesis Scleral lens which met with a great deal of success. We realized how simple to fit and how effective for the patient these lenses can be. Although we were having a good deal of success with this new modality, we were getting many inquiries on providing additional features.
Motivated by our customers inquiries, we embarked on an exploratory mission to find the additional feature asked for most by our clients; a presbyopic correction. While visiting the Illinois College of Optometry we had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Neil Hodur who had been working closely with our good friend Dr. Jennifer Harthan. The doctors are long-time clinical colleagues and they had a desire to bring a new scleral lens concept to the market that would fit a wide range of corneal configurations and also deliver a dependable presbyopic correction.
Dr. Hodur calculated out the lens design then worked with the R&D team at Metro Optics to produce this new lens concept. While Dr. Hodur focused on normal cornea patients needing standard distance and near corrections, Dr. Harthan focused on irregular cornea patients who desperately needed distance correction, but could also benefit from a near correction. Some of the results of their work are highlighted in the following case reports:
The result of the collaborative effort between Clinical Professional Optometrists, Drs. Hodur & Harthan, and the R&D team at Metro Optics was the InSight Scleral.
With the birth of InSight Scleral, a wide range of patients can now enjoy crisp distance and near vision in a remarkably comfortable, safe and effective Scleral lens design.
